The story of the 6505

The evolution of a legend! When it debuted in 1992, the legendary High Gain Amp 6505 caused a sensation and has received several updates over the years. The Peavey 6505+ was developed in collaboration with renowned artists and remains extremely popular to this day. Its descendant, the current Peavey 6505 II, which we want to introduce to you here, has been given several practical features that take the amp's playability and functionality to a new level.

The making of a classic

The 6505+ was originally released under the name 5150 as Eddie Van Halen's second signature model. It was created in close collaboration between the famously particular guitarist Eddie Van Halen and developer James Brown. The amp was inspired by Eddie Van Halen's Soldano SLO-100, which he played live and on much of the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and which also complemented his famous Marshall Superlead perfectly.
After production of the 6505+ was moved to the Far East, the model was discontinued a few years ago. As the 6505 before it, it has been resurrected under a new name.

The new features

This classic amp has now been given a few contemporary upgrades and reissued as the Peavey 6505 II. The Crunch switch on the rhythm channel is footswitchable, as is the FX Loop. The BIAS test points are accessible from the outside. Each channel has a separate 3-band EQ with additional Presence and Resonance controls. The sound is as you know and love it: endless gain, incredible punch and an aggressive, cutting high-gain tone. A 3-button footswitch is included.

About Peavey

Peavey Electronics – powerful sound since 1965

Peavey Electronics stands like few other names for uncompromising sound, innovation and reliability in the field of electric guitar amplifiers. Founded in 1965 by the then 23‑year‑old Hartley Peavey in a garage in Meridian, Mississippi, the company developed within a few decades into one of the world's leading manufacturers of musical instruments and audio technology. The vision was clear from the start: to make professional technology accessible and affordable for everyone – without sonic compromise.

Especially in the world of guitar amplifiers Peavey has secured a firm place in music history. With legendary models like the 6505®, originally created in collaboration with Eddie Van Halen as the "5150", or the versatile Classic® 30, Peavey has shaped entire music genres – particularly rock, hard rock and metal. The combination of brutal high‑gain sound, enormous presence and rugged construction makes Peavey amps a preferred choice for both stage and studio.

Alongside iconic tube amplifiers, Peavey also stands for technological innovation. With the company's own TransTube® technology they succeeded in convincingly emulating the dynamics and playing feel of tube amps in the world of solid‑state amplifiers – ideal for anyone seeking maximum reliability with minimal maintenance. Models like the Bandit 112 have therefore enjoyed cult status among beginners and experienced guitarists alike for decades.

What an amp!
9 October 2025 13:38

What an amp. I tried a lot of different amps, but the 6505 II is an absoluut beast. For me there is no better guitar amp, escpecialy if you are a live musician. The amp cuts through everything, is build like a tank and very reliable. And it says a lot that it is the standard on every (metal/ rock) festival in the world. Plug and play baby!

The Peavey 6505 II in action

Our Olli — a self-confessed Eddie Van Halen fan — immediately hauled the Peavey 6505 II into his Custom Shop living room to put it through its paces. We followed him with the camera; the result is here. Enjoy watching!
