The GT-12AY7 tube was used in many first-generation Fender amps. It delivers less gain than the succeeding 12AX7 type and sounds a bit rounder and softer. A popular trick is to swap the 12AX7/7025/ECC83 for a 12AY7 in the preamp section of amps that are primarily intended to deliver clean to slightly distorted sounds.

Richard Aspen Pittman is known to most guitarists as a tireless inventor, thinker and creative mind. Already at the age of 11 he played in local bands. At 18 he took a job at the newly opened Guitar Center in Hollywood. Through that job he made contacts with the top musicians of the time and was able to help during recording sessions and on tours to find the ultimate sound.
In 1979 he finally set himself up as an independent consultant with his own company, advising many musical-instrument manufacturers and numerous bands. In the same year he tried to optimise the way tube amps worked. He invented a special testing system for tubes and then sorted the selected tubes into different classes: tube matching was invented.
He then founded the company Groove Tubes. To this day there is still the misconception that Groove Tubes manufactured the tubes themselves. This is not the case: Aspen bought tubes from around the world, inspected and measured them, and then sold them in matched sets, resulting in a perfectly matched pair or quartet. Furthermore, by dividing them into different classes, the amplifier's sound could be influenced to suit personal preferences.

Ich hab die Röhre in mein EBS Valve Drive Pedal eingebaut, damit dieser weniger schnell verzerrt und damit mehr Einstellspielraum des Drive-Knobs bietet. Das funktioniert sehr gut und ohne Eigenrauschen.
