The BOSS RE-202 – a revival of the legendary Roland RE-201 Space Echo in a compact, modern and digital twin pedal with innovative features.
Since 1974 the Roland RE-201 Space Echo has been one of the most legendary and sought-after effects ever. Thanks to intensive development work and new innovations, the new BOSS RE-202 reproduces that authentic Space Echo sound more faithfully than any device before it.
Developed by the maker of the original, the modern pedal captures the magic of the RE-201 down to the last detail – from the magnetic tape and motor to the dynamic spring reverb and the tone-colouring preamp circuit.
To further enhance the classic Space Echo experience and adapt it to modern music, the BOSS RE-202 has been given a variety of new functions.
The magic of tape echo
Tape echo was the first delay effect and one of the earliest effect processors for electronic musicians. Unlike today's CPU-based tape echos, it is a comparatively simple technical device that uses a motor to move tape past one or more record and playback heads. The warm, full and dynamic tape-echo sound is influenced by many factors. As the input level constantly varies, the amount of tape saturation and compression changes continuously. In addition, variations in motor speed, friction, wow and flutter and other elements create an interesting and subtly modulated tonal character that never sounds exactly the same.
RE-201 Space Echo: Simply legendary
The RE-201 was a milestone for Roland and one of the best tape echos of its time. It featured three equally spaced playback heads that produced a wide variety of echo effects. It also had an innovative free-running tape system that offered excellent performance with minimal tape wear. The controls allowed quick access to clean single delays or different head combinations for dense, rhythmic echo effects. With its integrated spring reverb tank it also delivered high-quality ambience effects. The analogue preamp circuit was the final crucial ingredient for the Space Echo's tonal variety.
The rebirth of a masterpiece
The RE-202 is the result of state-of-the-art technologies and an extensive analysis of several RE-201 vintage units, including an original from the BOSS and Roland archives. This way the RE-202 brings the true Space Echo experience back to life in a flexible, modern pedal.
BOSS has previously captured the Space Echo's sound and essential characteristics close to the original. Through new technological developments we have now been able to delve even deeper into the tonal magic. With the RE-202 our developers have modelled the complex, non-linear behaviour of the RE-201 that helped create its legendary status in every detail. All factors influencing the sound were meticulously studied and modelled with entirely new algorithms – including tape transport, the record/playback mechanism, variations in motor speed, preamp colouring, tape wear, the character of the spring reverb and much more.
