This first ultra-light yet professional Class-D bass amplifier from Mesa/Boogie features an easy-to-use yet fully equipped preamp with all the shaping controls you need, paired with a powerful, punchy-sounding, reliable and featherweight 800-watt power section. The result is an amp that masters everything from the small club to the large concert stage and everywhere in between, and still fits in your gigbag pocket!
Pure Mesa tone and extensive features
The new Subway D-800 is based on a combination of characteristic circuits ranging from classic Mesa/Boogie tube models like the Vintage Bass 400+ and the newer Bass Strategy 8:88 to the MOSFET-driven precision and mid-focused definition of the Big Block 750 and the M9 Carbine. The new Subway D-800 embodies the best qualities of the entire Mesa/Boogie bass line and reveals a uniquely new voice.
With the Mute and an Active/Passive switch you can adjust the input headroom to suit your instrument. The MUTE switch mutes the signal from the input jack to the speaker output, the headphone output and the DI output to allow silent tuning. The tone-shaping of the Subway D-800 begins with the input section on the front, which consists of the input jack and two switches. Convenient indicator LEDs for all switched functions are located on the right side of the front panel.
Best connectivity
On the rear of the D-800 you’ll find numerous professional features and connectors. The Speakon speaker output jacks provide a secure connection to the speaker cabinets of your choice. An impedance switch lets you optimise the Subway’s mighty output for a variety of speaker configurations. Regardless of the impedance requirement, the Subway delivers its full power and great tone.
All Mesa/Boogie Subway bass amplifiers are built in Petaluma, California. The Mesa/Boogie Subway D-800 Head is supplied with a matching bag with shoulder strap. It is compatible with the speakers of the Mesa/Boogie Subway series.

In the late 1960s Randall Smith, one of the most famous amp repairers in the San Francisco Bay Area, was inspired to build his own amplifiers after developing a fondness for the tweed circuits of the 1950s. He loved their organic sound, the effective controls and the way the tone gently moved from clean to distortion and back again when the gain control was used.
To push forward with his own amplifier designs and concepts, he settled in Pentaluma, California in 1969 and worked on further developing his amps.
The characteristic, heavily distorted sound of his Mesa/Boogie amplifiers was initially the result of an electrically mis‑dimensioned preamp. Founder Randall Smith wasn’t sure whether the preamp’s output would be enough to drive the power amp, and he built it with four twin triodes, of which the first seven triodes are still used today to amplify the input signal.
Many years later Mesa/Boogie has grown into one of the major global players in the market for high‑end guitar and bass amplifiers and is a leader in the development of modern amp designs and circuits. The American company also holds several patents on special features and circuits, such as Multi‑Watt™, Dyna‑Watt™ and the Mesa CabClone™ cab simulator, which you’ll certainly come across when browsing our selection of Mesa/Boogie products.
