In collaboration with former Martin employee Dick Boak, Martin Guitar is proud to introduce a stunning high-end dreadnought model: the D-42 Special. The idea for this model originated almost 25 years ago when Martin installed its first laser-engraving machine, and Boak began experimenting with different ways to use it. Boak created an intricate ink drawing of a complex floral pattern intended to be laser-engraved onto a tortoiseshell pickguard, but the material could not be engraved safely. 23 years later Boak rediscovered his original drawing and thought it would make a beautiful piece if it were inlaid with pearl. He was right! Working with Bill Seymour and Jeremy Chism of Pearlworks, the trio altered the design so that a detailed pearl inlay was possible. The resulting prototype won the approval of Chris Martin IV, who asked Boak to expand the design to the fretboard and the headstock. The model also features premium East Indian rosewood for the back and sides, while the Top was selected from the highest-grade spruce. The scalloped, forward-shifted X-bracing provides the open projection for which Martin guitars are known. Other vintage-inspired appointments include antique-white binding, abalone inlays along the edge of the Top, on the fretboard extension and the rosette. It has a high-gloss finish with top-aging toner and open-nickel tuners with butterbean buttons.
