The Gibson Songwriter was introduced in the late 1990s and features a distinctive body in the Gibson Square Shoulder Modern Dreadnought design. The Songwriter Recording Artist EC impresses with the historic tonal advantages of the famous Gibson 1930s Scalloped-Advanced-X bracing, the long 25.5" scale length and tonewoods inspired by the 1936 Advanced Jumbo – a combination that produces a unique sound that is 100% Gibson. The Songwriter Recording Artist EC is handmade in Bozeman, Montana and benefits from a thermally aged Sitka spruce top mounted on a rosewood back and sides body with a cutaway. Thanks to the cutaway, the Songwriter Recording Artist EC offers improved access to the upper frets, making it ideal for lead guitarists and others seeking greater playability on their acoustic guitar. The mahogany neck with a 25.5" scale length has a comfortable round profile and is fitted with a fast-playing rosewood fretboard with binding, equipped with 20 standard frets and decorated with diamond-eye mother-of-pearl inlays. The neck is attached to the body via a dovetail joint using hide glue, ensuring a stable connection and maximum acoustic transfer. The bound headstock features a rosewood veneer with the Gibson logo and a crown inlay in mother-of-pearl. The nut is made of bone and high-quality gold Grover® open-back tuners are fitted to the back of the headstock. The bridge is also made of ebony and is fitted with a bone saddle, TUSQ® bridge pins and attractive mother-of-pearl inlays. The thermally aged Sitka spruce top is protected by a custom tortoiseshell-style pickguard and features a wide abalone rosette.
As the name suggests, the Songwriter Recording Artist EC was conceived as a high-end instrument for recording and live work and features premium electronics for easy integration with PA systems on stage or in the studio. The built-in L.R. Baggs™ HiFi System features two sensors under the bridge and an internal preamp in the guitar, delivering excellent dynamics, string balance and note definition while remaining very feedback-resistant. The preamp works with the sensors to provide a natural-sounding acoustic tone when the guitar is plugged into an amplifier. The volume and tone controls are discreetly hidden in the soundhole, making them easy to access yet virtually invisible to the audience. The Songwriter Recording Artist EC is supplied in a Gibson hardshell case that offers optimum protection during transport. The American Gibson Guitar Corporation, founded in 1902 by Orville Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, first became known for the production of mandolins and banjos. Today the company’s headquarters are in Nashville, Tennessee, and Gibson is one of the world’s most renowned and respected manufacturers of electric guitars.
The model Les Paul, named after its creator Lester William Polsfuss, is one of the most famous and best‑selling electric guitar shapes of all time and established the single‑cut guitar form, which has been copied, adopted and reinterpreted by numerous other manufacturers. The Les Paul is mainly prized for its sound, characterised as warm and full. The humbucker pickup largely responsible for that sound, in its now common design, was developed by Seth Lover at Gibson.
In the early 1960s the Gibson SG appeared as another solid‑body electric from Gibson. Originally intended as the successor to the Les Paul, it became — helped by Angus Young of AC/DC — another rock‑history icon and is the basis for the double‑cutaway guitar type.
With the Flying V and the Explorer Gibson is responsible for two body shapes that, although they were far ahead of their time when introduced in the late 1950s, have over the years also achieved legendary status. They still serve as the foundation for a host of heavy guitars today, for example from makers such as Jackson or ESP.
The Gibson Custom Shop produces custom orders, high‑quality one‑offs and precise replicas of famous models and legendary instrument years. These are often subjected to an artificial ageing process called relicing.
Almost as long as the company has existed, acoustic guitars have also been produced. The J‑45, the Hummingbird, the L‑00 and the SJ‑200 are among the world’s most beloved steel‑string acoustics and were the instruments of choice for Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and John Lennon.
