In Fender's early years practicality and functionality ruled. With the Telecaster, or Tele for short, Fender created a guitar that was reduced to essential functions, quick and easy to assemble from several parts and therefore easy to repair. This allowed the guitars to be offered at a comparatively affordable price.
Fender's production methods enabled simple manufacture with consistent instrument quality, but also produced a different sound. The clear, long-sustaining tones of the Telecaster clearly set it apart from the fat Gibson-style jazz sound. The Fender Custom Shop has made it its mission to study the high-quality vintage Telecasters of the time and recreate them down to the smallest detail. Here we have a very special Custom Shop one-off inspired by a Tele from the mid-1950s:
The Fender LTD Custom Shop 55 Telecaster Journeyman Relic Wide-Fade 2-Color Sunburst is a classic T-style electric guitar with a two-piece ash body. Ash was already used on the original Telecasters of the 50s and provides the foundation for the perfect vintage tone. The body wood was hand-selected to ensure an especially light weight and thus improve playing comfort. The aged maple neck with maple fretboard is shaped in an 11/56 off-centre V profile in the style of the 50s and features a 9.5" fretboard radius, giving the vintage feel a touch of modern comfort. The guitar is fitted with a classic S-S pickup configuration of two Fender Custom Shop hand-wound '55/'56 Tele set single-coils that deliver the perfect 50s-style vintage tone. Other features include Fender vintage-style tuners, dome speed knobs in aged nickel appearance, a Fender '55-'57 Tele bridge and a single-ply white 5-hole pickguard.
In the mid-50s other colours began to appear alongside the classic Blonde of the early models. The Fender LTD Custom Shop 55 Telecaster Journeyman Relic Wide-Fade 2-Color Sunburst is finished in a classic Wide-Fade 2-Color Sunburst. The guitar is delightfully dinged, dented and even a little scratched. One of the most attractive features of this relic level is the worn neck.
