After CBS took over in 1965 the Stratocaster underwent several changes. In 1966 the headstock was enlarged, for example, to align the Stratocaster's look with the Jaguar and Jazzmaster. The new look took some getting used to, but the larger headstock also seemed to counteract issues with wood warping that occurred with the old design. The design remained unchanged into the eighties before the smaller headstock returned. Guitars from this era are rarely copied in the Custom Shop, so this model, based on a 1968 guitar, is a true rarity:
The Fender Custom Shop 1968 Stratocaster DLX Closet Classic MN 3TS is a classic ST-style electric guitar with a two-piece alder body. Alder was already used on the original Stratocasters and provides the basis for the perfect vintage tone. The body wood was hand-selected to ensure particularly light weight and thereby improve playing comfort. The aged maple neck with maple fretboard is shaped in a 1969 "U" profile and has a 9.5" fretboard radius, offering the perfect compromise between vintage feel and modern comfort. The guitar is fitted with a classic S-S-S pickup configuration of three Fender Custom Shop hand-wound 1969 single-coils. Other features include Fender vintage-style tuners, white knob caps, a Fender 6-saddle American Vintage synchronized tremolo bridge and a three-ply white pickguard.
This model is finished in a classic 3-Tone Sunburst. The thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish allows the wood to resonate particularly well and makes the finish age more beautifully. We all know the stories of old guitars found in grandma's attic that were hardly played. That's the Closet Classic. It's in great condition with very minor signs of use, but it has aged perfectly over time. A few light scratches adorn the finish, the plastic on the pickguard and the pickups has started to take on that unmistakable yellow tint, and there is minimal patina on the hardware. The Closet Classic gives you the feeling of playing a long-lost treasure.
