After Fender had to remove the name Broadcaster from its electric guitars in 1951 following a complaint, a new name was sought for the successor to the Esquire. The idea for the name Telecaster came from Don Randall, the creative mind behind almost all Fender model names. Considering the dawning television age the name seemed fitting, as Leo Fenders earlier shop had been the first in the area to offer televisions.
The name Telecaster appeared on the headstock of the T-style guitar from 1951, and so Fenders first solidbody electric guitar finally received a lasting name by which it is still known today. Fenders production methods allowed simple manufacture while maintaining consistent instrument quality, but they also produced a different sound. The clear, long-sustaining tones of the Telecaster set it clearly apart from the thicker Gibson-style jazz sounds. The Fender Custom Shop has made it its mission to study these high-quality vintage guitars and reproduce them down to the smallest detail. The Fender Custom Shop 1952 Telecaster Sort Heavy Relic WBL is a classic T-style electric guitar with an ash body. Ash was already used on the original Telecasters and provides the foundation for the perfect vintage sound. The body wood was hand-selected to ensure an especially light weight and thereby improve playing comfort. The aged maple neck with maple fretboard is shaped in a Nocaster "U" profile in the style of the early 1950s and features a 9.5" fretboard radius, adding a touch of modern comfort and playability to the vintage feel. The guitar is fitted with a classic S-S pickup configuration of two Fender Custom Shop handwound "Twisted" Tele single-coils. Further appointments include Fender vintage-style tuners, dome speed knobs in an aged nickel finish and a single-ply black 5-hole pickguard.
The Fender Custom Shop 1952 Telecaster Sort Heavy Relic WBL is finished in a timeless White Blonde. The thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish ensures the wood can resonate particularly well and that the finish ages attractively. The most extreme of Fenders Relic levels, Heavy Relic, conjures the spirit of the most battle-worn and weathered Fender instruments in history.
