After Fender had to remove the name Broadcaster from its electric guitars in 1951 following a complaint, a new name was sought for the successor to the Esquire. The idea for the new name Telecaster came from Don Randall, the creative mind behind almost all Fender model names. In view of the emerging television age, the name seemed fitting, since Leo Fender’s former shop was the first in the area to offer televisions.
The name Telecaster appeared on the headstock of the T-style guitar from 1951 onwards and so Fender’s first solidbody electric guitar finally received a permanent name for which it is still known today. Fender’s production methods enabled easy manufacture with consistent instrument quality, and also produced a different sound. The clear, long-sustaining tones of the Telecaster set it apart from the thicker Gibson-style jazz sounds. The Fender Custom Shop has made it its mission to study these high-quality vintage guitars and recreate them down to the smallest detail. Here we have a very special Custom Shop one-off inspired by a Tele from the early ’50s:
The Fender Custom Shop 1952 Telecaster Sort Heavy Relic SHG is a classic T-style electric guitar with an ash body. Ash was already used in the original Telecaster guitars and provides the basis for the perfect vintage sound. The body wood was hand-selected to ensure particularly light weight and thus improve playing comfort. The aged maple neck with maple fretboard is carved in a Nocaster “U” profile in the style of the early ’50s and features a 9.5" fretboard radius, giving the vintage feel a touch of modern comfort and playability. The guitar is equipped with a classic S-S pickup configuration consisting of a Fender Custom Shop '51 Nocaster single-coil at the bridge and a handwound “Twisted” Tele single-coil at the neck. Further features include Fender vintage-style tuners, chrome-look dome speed knobs and a single-ply black 5-hole pickguard.
The Fender Custom Shop 1952 Telecaster Sort Heavy Relic SHG is finished in a striking shimmering Shoreline Gold. The thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish allows the wood to vibrate particularly freely and helps the finish age beautifully. The most extreme of Fender’s Relic levels, Heavy Relic, evokes the spirit of the most battle‑scarred and well‑worn Fender instruments in history.
