After Fender had to remove the name Broadcaster from its electric guitars in 1951 following a complaint, a new name was sought for the successor to the Esquire. The idea for the new name Telecaster came from Don Randall, the creative mind behind almost all Fender model names. Considering the emerging television age the name seemed fitting, as Leo Fender's earlier shop had been the first in the area to offer televisions.
The name Telecaster appeared on the headstock of the T-style guitar from 1951 onwards and so Fender's first solid-body electric guitar finally received a permanent name by which it is still known today. Fender's production methods allowed easy manufacture with consistent instrument quality, while also producing a different sound. The clear, long-sustaining tones of the Telecaster set it distinctly apart from the fat Gibson-style jazz sounds. The Fender Custom Shop has made it its mission to study these high-quality vintage guitars and recreate them down to the smallest detail. The Fender Custom Shop 1952 Telecaster HVREL COP MBAH Heavy Relic Masterbuilt Andy Hicks is a classic T-style electric guitar with a two-piece ash body. Ash was already used on the original Telecasters and provides the basis for the perfect vintage tone. The body wood was hand-selected to ensure an especially light weight and thus improve playing comfort. The aged maple neck with maple fretboard is shaped in a '52-style U profile and fitted with a compound fretboard radius of 7.25" - 9.5", offering the perfect compromise between vintage feel and modern comfort and making it easier for the fretting hand. The guitar is equipped with a classic S-S pickup configuration of two Fender '51 Nocaster single-coil pickups. Additional features include Fender vintage-style tuners, chrome-look dome speed knobs, a Fender 51 Nocaster Relic bridge and a single-ply black 5-hole pickguard.
This model is finished in an eye-catching Copper. The thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish allows the wood to resonate particularly well and helps the finish age more beautifully. The most extreme of Fender's relic levels, Heavy Relic, evokes the spirit of the most well-worn and road-tested Fender instruments in history.
