Fifty years ago Dana Bourgeois built his first guitar on a desk in a student dormitory. What began as an experiment became a lifelong mission: the construction of some of the world’s finest steel‑string guitars. For the anniversary Bourgeois is releasing a strictly limited 50th Anniversary Series of just 25 instruments worldwide. The Soloist OMC is one of the cornerstones of this series.
The Soloist represents a decisive phase in Dana Bourgeois’ career. Developed in the mid‑1980s together with Eric Schoenberg, it was conceived as a modern interpretation of the classic OM: fingerstyle‑optimised, with a cutaway, contemporary voicing and wood combinations that at the time deliberately took new paths. A concept that put the OM back on the map in a lasting way.
The Soloist OMC 50th Anniversary stays true to this philosophy: uncompromising playability, noble materials and a deliberately restrained aesthetic. The back and sides are made from Macassar ebony with impressive figuring and depth of colour. The top of Italian bearclaw spruce shows perfect grain and just the right amount of character. The fretboard and Pyramid Bridge are also crafted from ebony, colour‑matched to the body. Black ebony binding and wooden purfling emphasise the organic look.
Instead of lavish inlays, Bourgeois opts for a subtle highlight: the “Ghost Squares and Diamonds”. These discreet fretboard markers in 14‑carat gold are reserved exclusively for the 50th Anniversary models and also appear as an inlay on the heel cap.
Sonically this OMC plays at the very top. Enormous dynamics, impressive volume even when new, and a balance that renders complex fingerstyle passages clearly and in control. Delicate nuances with gentle playing, powerful growl with harder attack. Rich in overtones without ever sounding cluttered.
The neck combines a vintage feel with modern ergonomics: slightly slimmer, a light V profile, plus the generous string action typical of OM models – comfortable and precise at once.

Dana Bourgeois founded Bourgeois Guitars in 1992 after he developed a passion for learning about and building high-quality guitars while studying at Bowdoin College in Maine. He built his own guitars in the early 1970s and opened a small shop in Maine in 1977, where he worked as a luthier and repairer.
