The Hogtop 00 All-Koa occupies a special place among the high‑end guitars from American luthier Bourgeois, as it is the only model whose body is made entirely from Hawaiian koa. This wood is particularly rare, so only salvaged deadwood may be harvested and used. Koa displays a beautiful grain in striking cream, reddish‑brown or even dark brown tones; a flamed figure like the one seen on this instrument is extremely rare. Koa is a dense tropical hardwood that emphasises the midrange while adding extra brilliance and fullness in the upper frequencies. Koa's tonal profile combines the midrange of mahogany with the highs of maple. Because of its density a new koa guitar can sound a little bright at first, similar to maple. But the more a koa guitar is played, the more the tone opens up, expanding the midrange and rewarding the player with a richer, sweeter and more resonant sound.
Due to its smaller 00 body the Bourgeois Guitars Hogtop 00 All-Koa will especially appeal to fingerstyle players. A 00 koa guitar like the Hogtop 00 All-Koa is particularly well suited to players who use more fingertip technique and tend to play with a stronger attack.
