The Z knob adjusts the input impedance between 9.8k and 319k to adapt the pedal to different pickups and input impedances. One Control recommends placing the Raspberry pedal at the front of the effects chain.

The Z pot changes the input impedance of the pedal, which influences the sound quite a bit. The difference becomes a bit smaller when you add more gain, but I like what it does to the sound of my guitar.
