The company Meinl was founded in 1951 by Roland Meinl as a one-man operation producing cymbals in a cellar workshop. Now in its third generation and family-run, Roland Meinl Musikinstrumente has become one of the biggest names in the production of cymbals, percussion instruments and sound therapy instruments, with locations in Gutenstetten and Nashville, TN.
Meinl Cymbals are manufactured at two locations. One production site is at the company headquarters in Gutenstetten in Franconia. This site has been specialised in high-precision automated production and hammering and has been continuously modernised since the new build in 2003. The series produced exclusively in Germany include, among others, HCS, Classics Custom, Classics Custom Dark, Classics Custom Dual as well as Pure Alloy and Pure Alloy Custom.
With the introduction of the traditionally hand-hammered cymbals of the Byzance Series in 2000, Meinl entered a centuries-old tradition of cymbal manufacturing in the home of cymbal craftsmanship – Turkey. Since the construction of the Turkish production facility in Samsun in 2019, production has taken place in a highly modern manufactory. After manufacture there, the cymbals are finished in the German factory and each one is strictly inspected for look and sound.
The cymbal range comprises seven main series that, based on six different alloys, cover a particularly broad sonic spectrum. These include: Byzance, Pure Alloy, Classic Custom, HCS, Symphonic/Marching, Generarion X and Artist Concept Models.
The range is complemented by Drum Gear – accessories for the drum kit – from drum rugs through practice pads and stick bags to cymbal cleaners and drum keys. Meinl Cymbals' endorsers include some of the most successful and well-known drummers of our time, among them: Benny Greb, Robert "Sput" Searight, Matt Garstka, Anika Nilles, Mike Johnston, Jost Nickel, Chris Coleman, Luke Holland, Brann Dailor and Wolfgang Haffner.

Zu Beginn hatte ich etwas Sorge, dass ich ein Becken mit kaum Sustain bekomme, was ja bei dem Namen nicht verwunderliche wäre. Da ich das Becken aber bereits seit längerer Zeit antesten wollte, bestellte ich es kurzer Hand. Das Erste was auffällt ist die Optik, in die ich mir sofort verliebte. Die raue, unbehandelte Fläche ist einfach ein Hingucker. Bei schnelleren Stockanschlägen sorgt das Rauschverhalten dafür, dass die Definition etwas flöten geht. Kurz, es mangelt nicht an Sustain und nach ein paar kleinen Preperationen mit etwas Klebeband, erhielt ich einen kontrollierten verwaschenen Sound. Der Klang ist insgesamt sehr dunkel und sicherlich nicht für all zu laute Umgebungen zu empfehlen. Es ist sehr dünn, weshalb es sich bestens zum Crashen eignet. Nach einem härteren Anschlag klingt es nicht zu lange nach, ansonsten kann hier auch etwas Klebeband helfen um das Ausschwingverhalten zu regulieren. Die Bell sticht nicht besonders heraus (fast ein bisschen dumpf) und regt beim Anschlag sogar das gesamte Becken mit an. Mir gefällt das sehr gut, ist aber sicherlich Geschmacksfrage. Ich hatte bereits die Möglichkeit das Becken in ein paar Aufnahmen zu spielen und bin sehr begeistert. Es fügt sich wunderbar im musikalischen Kontext ein und ist einfach butterweich zu spielen. Im Live-bereich spiele ich lediglich ein linkes 18" und das 22" Ride. Ich bin wuschlos glücklich und würde sogar nur das Ride alleine spielen. Fazit : Am Ende ist es wieder eine Frage des Geschmacks. Das Becken kann definitiv überzeugen mit seinem komplexen, weichen und dunklem Sound und ist für ruhigere Situationen bestens Geeignet. In Aufnahmesitutaionen wunderbar und schön weich im Mix. Bedenkt noch das jedes Becken aus der selben Reihe unterschiedlich klingen kann, da es handgefertigt wurde und bereits die Materialvariation den Sound beeinflussen kann.
