About Charvel

Charvel began in the late 1970s as a guitar workshop in southern California. It became known not only for repairing guitars but for modifying popular models like the Fender Stratocaster and converting them into so‑called Superstrats. These guitars found particular resonance in the metal scene of the 1980s. When 1978 Grover Jackson joined the company, he quickly began releasing his own guitars under the name Charvel. Until 1986 all Charvel guitars were produced exclusively in California; to meet the high demand production was eventually moved to Japan. In 2002 Fender acquired both Charvel and Jackson from the Japanese company IMC, which had bought the two firms from Grover Jackson in 1989.

Today Charvel produces a range of different guitar series both in the USA and in Mexico. When it comes to Charvel's individual series, everyone can find a suitable instrument. The Charvel range can mainly be divided into three different categories, which in turn can be split into several subgroups. These categories are the series DK (also called Dinky), So‑Cal and San Dimas. The characteristics of the guitars can sometimes be hard to distinguish. The guitars of the DK or Dinky line are, as the name suggests, smaller and lighter than those of the other series. This makes longer playing sessions noticeably more comfortable. The difference between So‑Cal and San Dimas is a little harder to define, since both lines are available in two styles. Both the So‑Cal and the San Dimas are available as ST guitars and T guitars. At first glance they mainly differ in that the San Dimas guitars usually have no pickguard, and they also differ slightly in body construction and in the available pickup options. All Charvel series and styles are also available as Pro‑Mod models — specially modified guitars for optimised performance.

With this huge selection Charvel doesn't stop there and also offers, in addition to a Custom Shop, signature models from artists like Jim Root or Jake E. Lee. There's also the USA Select line — handmade guitars from the Custom Shop in Corona, California. One thing is for sure: whichever Charvel guitar you choose, you'll get a quality instrument that will give you many years of enjoyment.

In addition to electric guitars, Charvel also builds excellent electric basses with the San Dimas Bass PJ and JJ series. The basses come equipped with a mix of DiMarzio and Charvel's own pickups, delivering seriously great tone.
