The story of Kawai goes back to the year 1927 when the founder Koichi Kawai started building pianos and organs. Koichi Kawai gained a great deal of his knowledge from his work at Yamaha. The company was founded on 9. August 1927 and has evolved to one of the largest manufacturers of pianos and grand pianos in the world. Today, globally seen, Kawai is the second largest music instrument maker. The German HQ´s are in Krefeld.
Today Kawai builds some of the finest instruments that are available. This success is due to the fact that the standards of craftsmanship set by founder Koichi Kawai are followed till today. Still, Kawai is open for new technologies and focuses on their implementation if the market will profit from these improvements. Kawai´s grand pianos have shared the limelight with finalists of an impressing number in international competitions. Since 1985 Kawai has been the official supplier of the grand piano for the international Chopin piano competition, many other competitions have also chosen Kawai products to become the competition standard.
For over 70 years Kawai´s experienced piano builders and craftsmen have concentrated on making quality products at affordable prices. Kawai is very eager to be as environmental friendly as possible in all aspects of production, research, development, design and sales. The main goal is to save or reduce the used amount of natural resources, recycle materials and reduce the production of waste. This effort was rewarded in 1997 when Kawai was rewarded the international certificate ISO 14001, as the first music instrument manufacturer ever, for an excellent environmental management.
