The G major sansula "Melody", just like the pocket kalimba B11 "Melody" from Hokema, has an 11-note reed set that is precisely tuned to the G major scale in the factory tuning. This range of notes can be used to play a variety of songs and melodies as well as chords to accompany songs or melodies. The "Melody" is just as suitable for improvisation and intuitive playing.
The sansula - a patented invention from HOKEMA - is a new development of the kalimba (also known as sansa or mbira), which originated in southern Africa. Kalimbas are reed instruments that are plucked with the thumbs or fingers. In Africa, they are found in countless shapes and designs, in which the vibration of the tongue is amplified in various ways (e. g. on a resonance box, a hollow body such as a calabash gourd or simply a piece of solid wood). With the sansula, the vibration of the tongue is first "stored" in a block of wood, which then transmits it to a sound membrane. In this way, the sound can be heard for much longer than with other methods of sound amplification. The result is a wonderful, soft sound, rich in overtones, which is easy to elicit from the instrument.

Die Idee einer Durtonleiter für die Sansula gefällt mir sehr gut und ergitb neue Möglichkeiten. Die Zungen haben im Vergleich zum pentatonischen Instrument leider ein kleines metallisches Eigengeräusch, das den Gesamtklang dadurch etwas weniger weich und voll erscheinen lässt. Deshalb fehlt ein bisschen der typische Sansula- sound undlässt sie etwas härter erscheinen.
Grossartige, lange, harmonische Resonanzen- wie ein ungedämpftes Piano durch diese Membran. Instrument ist präzis gestimmt und spielt sich gut, kein Scheppern. Im Bild hat es unterhalb des Holzrahmens was Weisses- das gibt es nicht, man kann die Hokema gut in den Händen halten (etwa 5cm Höhe). Nicht günstig, aber absolut hochwertig, herrlicher Klang und den Preis wert.
Die Sansula Melody klingt nicht so rund und ausgewogen wie die basic, das hat mich etwas enttäuscht. Auch liegt sie nicht so gut in der Hand, weil sie grösser ist und der Holzrahmen tiefer, was das Spielen erschwert.
