Ibanez RG
The electric guitars from the RG series are among the best-selling and therefore also among the most popular instruments from the Japanese guitar maker Ibanez. The success story of the RG guitar begins in 1987 with a variation of the signature guitar model Ibanez JEM by the American guitarist Steve Vai.
The abbreviation RG stands for "Roadstar-Guitar". Considering that the series has been produced continuously and constantly developed since its launch, the Roadstar-Guitar beasts have certainly put their horsepower on the road.
The Ibanez RG guitars are particularly popular with metal guitarists. This is thanks to the very thin and easy-to-play "Wizard" maple necks. In combination with the slim body with its iconic horns and large cutaways, the electric guitars are very fast and easy to play and still easy to fret in the high registers.
The fretboards of Ibanez RG guitars are often made of rosewood or maple and are fitted with 24 frets. Variations, such as the RGD series with its extended scale length of 672 mm instead of the usual 648 mm, naturally have additional frets. The body is usually made of basswood or mahogany, less commonly other woods such as ash or maple. Closely associated with the RG series are the Edge tremolo system, an HHS pickup configuration with two humbuckers and one single-coil pickup, and the 5-way switch with tone and volume controls for versatile wiring options.
The Ibanez RG is available in different variations: as the affordable Gio variant (GRG), as a downtuning model (RGD), as an arch-top version (RGA) or even with a reversed headstock (RGR). In addition to the standard series, the Ibanez RG is available as a Prestige Line or as a high-end instrument in the J.Custom variant.
