The Engl E606 Ironball Head 20 SE is a practical all-rounder. The 20-watt head has a two-channel preamp with no fewer than four 12AX7 tubes. The power amp houses two EL84 tubes. If full power is too much, you can also reduce the Ironball 20 SE to 1 watt. From crystal-clear cleans to crunch and the thick metal wall of sound, both channels feature a switchable boost with plenty of headroom. Distorted guitar tones can be enriched with the built-in delay and reverb effects. If you love brutally tight palm-muting, you can make use of the built-in noise gate.

The Ironball looks the part in its black-silver metal housing, yet weighs only 7 kg. The typical Engl sound is delivered quickly. Whether in the living room, the studio or on stage, the E606 Head impresses! Three-band EQ and an additional presence control in the lead channel clear the way for splendid guitar rhythms and solos. The impedance can be switched between 8 and 16 ohms, and a suitable cabinet of your choice can be connected in no time.
Recording king
You can also record the Ironball Special Edition's sounds silently via the built-in Recording-Out. Eight different cabinet simulations, each with its own tonal character, invite you to try and experiment. Performance is monitored via an adjustable headphone output with an emulated signal for quiet practice. Not every tube amp can do that! If things need to get loud, power can also be reduced using the Power Soak feature.

The popular Engl Ironball is also available in a Special Edition version: the E606SE is a versatile, compact lunchbox amp with extensive features. The power amplifier delivers 20 watts of output power, 2 channels with a common tone control are available. Gain and master boost are foot-switchable. An integrated IR loader turns the E606SE into a sophisticated recording amp - 8 IRs can be loaded. A balanced XLR DI output is provided for easy connection to recording equipment. Digital reverb and delay are also on board, and an integrated noise gate effectively suppresses background noise. External effects units can be integrated via a tube-buffered, serial loop-in path. A MIDI interface is also on board - the effects section, the noise gate and all switching operations can be controlled via MIDI. The output power of the amp can be reduced to 0 via Powersoak.

Gesucht war ein kleiner Röhrenverstärker, der per Midi gesteuert werden kann. Beim E606SE lassen sich sämtliche Schalterstellungen abspeichern, nicht jedoch die Stellung der Potentiometer (was für meine Zwecke genau passt). Der Lead-Kanal bringt genau den Sound, den man von einem Engl erwartet: Reichlich Gain-Reserven, transparente Höhen und gutes Bassfundament. Eine Überraschung war der Clean-Kanal: In Stellung 11Uhr des Gain-Reglers kriege ich auch mit EMGs noch cleane, schön offene und geschmeidige Sounds hin. Bei höheren Gains fährt der Kanal in ein sehr angenehmes Anzerren. Dieser Effekt kann auch durch Zuschalten des Gain Boost erreicht werden. Überhaupt haben sich Gain- und Master-Boost als sehr spannende Schalter erwiesen, die eine Menge Soundmöglichkeiten bringen bzw. den Verstärker (fast) zu einem Vierkanaler machen. Die Boosts können zwar nicht im Detail geregelt werden, die Vorgabe ist aber sehr sinnvoll gewählt. Als Grössenkompromiss (das Teil ist fast genau gleich gross wie ein Marshal DSL1) müssen sich die Kanäle die Klangregelung teilen. Diese ist für eine passive Schaltung recht wirkungsvoll, es lassen sich aber keine (zu) extremen Sounds einregeln. In meinem Setup ist das kein entscheidender Nachteil: Regelung so einstellen, dass für beide Kanäle eine gute Grundlage da ist, dann pro Patch mit dem eingeschleiften Line 6 HX Effects-EQ nachregeln. Der wirkliche Hammer des Verstärkers ist seine Studio-Tauglichkeit. Mit dem eingebauten Powersoak lässt sich der Verstärker sogar auf Null absenken (es muss dann noch nicht mal eine Box angeschlossen sein). Anders als bei anderen Powersoaks wird dabei das Frequenzspektrum nicht (entscheidend) beschnitten. Die 3 bereits eingespeicherten IRs von Engl-Boxen sind sehr brauchbar, es lassen sich aber noch weitere, eigene IRs ablegen. Damit wird Recording mit Mikrophon vor der Box wirklich überflüssig.
