Gibson Flying V
At the end of the 1950s Gibson wanted to modernise and shed its somewhat dusty, conservative image. No guitar embodies this better than the Flying V.
The Flying V was first introduced in 1958 but sold only a handful of units in its early years, so production was halted in 1962. The guitar's popularity rose sharply in the mid-60s after several well-known musicians began playing Flying Vs, including Albert King and Jimi Hendrix. Due to increasing demand Gibson resumed production in 1967. By the heyday of hard rock and heavy metal in the 1970s and 80s, the Flying V had become an absolute icon of rock music.
In typical Flying V construction a mahogany body with a mahogany neck is used, though there are models that feature other woods. The electronics also vary by model, similar to the choice of woods. A Flying V is, however, always equipped with two humbuckers which are controlled by three knobs and a 3-way switch.
