However, Les Paul did not like the design which featured a thinner mahogany body with beveled edges and pointed horns, so the guitar eventually got a new name: the SG, which stood for Solid Guitar. It was actually a big success for Gibson and obviously the right design for the times. The early Les Paul guitars had huge necks, but by 1960 the neck underwent several modifications until it became whats known as the slim-taper design. The Gibson SG took it one step farther, making the SGs neck among the fastest ever designed. Gibson SG Special-style body is made from solid mahogany with a solid mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard and pearloid dot inlays. The Gibson SG Special features a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, 3-way pickup selector, and a stopbar with tune-o-matic bridge. The Gibson SG Special comes with a pair of coverless humbucking pickups: a 490R in the neck position and a 490T in the bridge position for power, whether youre playing rhythm or solo. With the classic dual horns of the Gibson SG body, the power of dual humbuckers and a classic red finish, the Gibson SG Special guitar offers the best combination of features and value in the SG line. The Gibson 490 humbucker has a modern edge that delivers a more contemporary tonal range thats perfect for almost any style of music. The 490R, with its neck spaced pole pieces, is perfectly calibrated to match the 490T, which is spaced for the bridge position. Both employ Alnico II magnets for a super smooth frequency response. This new Heritage Cherry finish replaces the Wine Red finish. GIBSON SG SPECIAL ELECTRIC GUITAR FEATURES Body: Mahogany. Neck: Mahogany. Neck Profile: Rounded. Fingerboard: Rosewood.
