The viola is actually a larger, deeper-sounding design of the violin. One can also say that the viola is an alto violin, wherein with "alto" the pitch is meant. In addition to size and tuning of the viola to the violin also differs from the strings. The three treble strings of the viola in pitch correspond to the three lower of a violin. The lowest string of the viola is a fifth lower.
