Universal Audio

Universal Audio, also known as UREI, was founded in 1958 by Bill Putnam Sr. as a design and manufacturing addition to his Universal Recording recording studio business. Universal followed their recording studio customers to California, where they are still located, and developed the now famous LA-2A optical stereo leveling amplifier, 1108 preamp and the 1176LN peak limiter. After being bought and neglected by Harman Industries, Universal Audio was re-founded in 1999 by Bill's sons, James Putnam and Bill Putnam Jr. Today Universal Audio produces classic analog recording equipment based on the original designs and new digital recording gear such as the UAD-2 PCIe DSP interface cards, UAD plug-ins and the Apollo series recording interfaces. It's nearly impossible to put into perspective Universal Audio's impact on recording and professional audio.
