The company PRS guitars is situated in Steavensville/Maryland. It was founded by guitarist and luthier Paul Reed Smith. He was looking for a combination of Gibson and fender sound, he was most inspired by the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul Junior. His top goal was to produce top guitars. In the beginnings he would only build around one guitar a month, that he would them test at a gig, using the impressions he won to perfect the next Guitar.

Armed with these instruments he used to hang out at the local concert arenas to make friends with the roadies. With a backstage pass in hand, he’d take his guitars to the stars. His first customers were Ted Nugent, Carlos Santana, Al Di Meola and Howard Leese. His business plan was like this: If someone made an order, paid a deposit, and then didn’t love the finished guitar, he'll get his deposit back.

At last two prototypes were built. With these two prototypes he went on the road, visiting each and every guitar dealer up and down the East Coast. He came back with enough orders to start a company in 1985. The ever growing demand forced him to expand in the mid 90´s and change from pure hand crafted instruments, to partly maschine made instruments. However, this meant no change to the quility and looks of his instruments. To fulfill the demand for low buget guitars, Paul Reed Smith started to produce the SE modells in Korea in the late 90´s.

In 2005, PRS Guitars could celebrate their 20 year anniversary. Of cause a bunch of anniversary-models was produced , all of them sought-after collecters instruments today. The best known Paul Reed Smith Guitars are the PRS Custom, the PRS McCarty, the PRS Santana and the PRS Singlecut.
