The Neumann U 87 Ai is probably the best‑known and most widely used studio microphone from Neumann. It is equipped with a large dual‑diaphragm capsule that allows the different polar patterns — omnidirectional, cardioid and figure‑8 — to be selected via a switch on the capsule head. Another switch on the rear of the Neumann U 87 Ai engages a 10 dB pad. This allows the Neumann U 87 Ai to handle sound pressure levels up to 127 dB without distortion. Furthermore, the frequency response can be reduced in the low end to compensate, for example, for the proximity effect. The low‑frequency rise that is unavoidable with pressure‑gradient transducers during close miking is compensated in the Neumann U 87 Ai so that in the cardioid position a flat frequency response is achieved at a vocal distance of 30 to 40 cm and in the figure‑8 position at 15 to 20 cm distance.
