Excellent Tape Delay Pedal

Thumper on 19.06.2022

I'd been looking for one of these for some months and, as Musik Produktiv were apparently the only place in the EU with any in stock, I decided to jump on the chance.

If you've used or heard the Tape Core Deluxe, it's basically the same algorithm without the *very* annoying, occasional, yet ear-blowing pops. All of the features from the Tape Core's software package are now under your fingertips and very easily accessible. Saturation, Wow/Flutter, Reverb Depth, Kill Dry, Expression Function etc, which is very welcome. Just long press the "Select" knob.

The tape heads are more defined and present when using one head at a time, so you don't get (for example) the "quarter note plus dotted eighth" definition of the Duotime, the Strymon DIG or many Boss units, but the original had the same response. The Reverb doesn't sound like a pure spring - it sounds to have some sort of hall effect added, but compared to the spring emulation on the RE-20 that's very welcome as it's usable in its own right.

The self-oscillation function is also very smooth, ramps up nicely without going into extreme and unrecoverable overload, and adjusting the time knob "on the fly" gives that classic speed-up and slow-down "catching up" effect. The OLED display is small but very bright and easily viewed from any angle.

I've knocked off a single point for features as there are no presets, which is slightly confusing considering it has an otherwise full MIDI implementation. The supplied manual omits the MIDI table completely but it's available on the NUX website. Oh, and it also comes with a pair of 5-Pin MIDI to 3.5mm TRS stereo inline adapters for MIDI in and out, which is a very nice touch.

Less expensive than an RE-2 (which requires an extra footswitch and lots of power on/off to use its full potential), and less than half the cost of an RE-202 (which is currently unavailable due to stock issues). If you just want a very good emulation of the classic Tape Echo and don't need presets, with a really good and easily accessible feature set, this is well worth a look.
