In the early 1980s John Suhr, who regularly played guitar in local bars and was skilled with his hands, began building electric guitars and searching for the sound that was perfect to his ears. He started working at Rudy's Music Shop under Rudy Pensa, who is still known today for his high-quality guitars. The collaboration was a huge success: under the name "Pensa Suhr" John Suhr built electric guitars for, among others, Mark Knopfler, Reb Beach, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Steve Stevens and many more.
In 1995 John Suhr joined the Fender Custom Shop as a Senior Masterbuilder, before fulfilling his lifelong dream in 1997 by founding Suhr Guitars and opening a small guitar workshop in California. John already had a growing fanbase, especially among professional guitarists—the aforementioned Reb Beach and Mark Knopfler remained customers and drew in new interest. For the first time John Suhr had full control over the entire production process. Even today the guitars are inspected down to the smallest detail after completion. Due to high demand the small factory has since grown many times over.
Today the name Suhr Guitars from Lake Elsinore, California stands not only for top-class pickups and guitar amps, but above all for Custom Shop electric guitars and basses that score highly not only in workmanship, finest woods and tone, but especially in design. Professional artists have remained loyal to Suhr, so alongside the standard lines there are numerous signature instruments, including those from Andre Nieri, Andy Wood, Mateus Asato and of course Pete Thorn.
