Maximum tuning stability! The string is threaded through the horizontal hole in the post until it lies approximately taut over the frets. Then you turn the rear thumbwheel clockwise with your thumb and forefinger. A small pin inside the post clamps the string in place. And then you can tune. The ingenious thing about this mechanism: if you loosen the thumbwheel and continue turning it back, it ultimately ends up in the idle position — i.e. the thumbwheel can never fall off and be lost!
