Dave Friedman has expanded his successful IR preamp series with another model: the IR-J is Jake E. Lee's signature tube preamp. The IR basically packs Jake E. Lee's JEL-100 and JEL-20 amps (with the legendary 800/Plexi voicings) into a compact floor pedal. As with all pedals in the IR series, the preamp uses a duet of 12AX7 tubes that are operated at high voltage – so it's not just an excuse to add tubes, but real tube sound and dynamics. The boost section is different from the other IR series preamps – the IR-J offers a TS-style booster (yes, the green thing from Japan) for each channel – volume and tone can be adjusted per channel using a trimpot. But that's not all: the IR-J also features an internal IR loader – 18 high-quality IRs created by Friedman are pre-installed, and of course third-party IRs can also be loaded. The IR-J Editor software can be used to customize the preamp, and 128 presets can be addressed via MIDI. External effects pedals can be integrated via the integrated FX loop. Whether as standalone preamp, amp in a box pedal for live use, or as a sophisticated recording amp/preamp, the IR-J delivers!
