Walter O. Stanton was born in Canton, Ohio in 1914. After graduating with a degree in electronics from the state university of Wayne in 1939 he became a forerunner in the audio sector and played a significant part in establishing the professional audio industry. Stanton was president of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) as well as of the Institute of High Fidelity. W. Stanton invented the first diamond stylus which could be changed by the user. At that time it was a very necessary invention to help create the market for audio products. Stanton also invented the stereophonic and the quadraphonic pickups. In 1950 Stanton acquired the audio component manufacturer Pickering & Company and used the brand to sell his own patented pick up stylus. About 10 years later Stanton started his new company, called “Stanton Magnetic”, one of the first American companies to produce magnet pickups. Walter would stay company president of the 2 companies till 1998 and then sold the companies to Gérard Cohen (Tracoman), the take over was perfect in October 1998. In March 1999 Stanton Magnetic moved to a new 3.500 m² location in Hollywood, Florida. In 2002 a new high power pickup was presented. The 890 SA is initially for DJs who scratch and remix. The goal was to achieve the same performance as with HiFi pickups (high class reproduction of the music, perfect stereo and a clear defined sound) and at the same time be tough enough to take the beating of pro DJs on the worlds stages! Being a world leader in pick up production Stanton started extending it product range and has since been offering turntables, mixer, cd player, DJ box sets, effects, headphones and accessories. Stanton now has a whole new range of turntables. The Stanton STR8-100 has the new high torque direct drive and the same tonearm as all models of the STR-8 family. Due to the straight construction no anti-skating is needed. Furthermore the Stanton STR8-100 features an S/PDIF digital output making to possible to connect directly to the soundcard of a PC. The professional DJ´s Craze and Focus helped intensively whilst developing the Stanton mixers and many of their ideas and wishes have been transformed into exiting features. Stanton’s new SMX-501Hybridmixer is a good example for perfect sound and perfect styling coming together. Stanton also had a significant part in developing and marketing the most revolutionary DJ system of the new millennium: Final Scratch.
