The Big Muff is one of the most legendary effect pedals of all time — designer Bob Myer and Electro Harmonix founder Mike Matthews created an absolute bestseller in the late '60s, and to this day the Big Muff stands for singing, gritty fuzz with long sustain. Over its development history the iconic circuit went through various updates and modifications; tinkerer Bob Myer created numerous prototypes that didn't always reach production. Josh Scott — owner of JHS Pedals — is a declared Big Muff fan and has caused a stir with his own Muff versions. While researching a book on the history of Electro Harmonix, contact was made with Bob Myer. On a visit to Bob Myer’s house, Josh Scott and his friend Daniel Danger were allowed to explore the legendary garage workshop where many EHX pedals were born. In addition to many odd prototypes and trial boards, various schematics and documents were archived there — including the circuit diagram of a Big Muff with dual op amps that never went into series production. This variant is now available: as a limited edition from JHS and as a production model from Electro Harmonix. The Big Muff PI 2 uses two op amps — the result is fat low end, crisp highs and more defined clipping with extended dynamics. The artwork, as with the Lizard Queen/Lizard King pedal, was created by Daniel Danger.
