Guitar strings belong to the guitar just like the heads on a drum. Without strings you just have a very expensive cricket bat and probably a quite bad one at that. The thickness of guitar strings is defined as a decimal fraction of an inch and the set is usually defined by the thickness of the high E string. A set of tens means that the high E string is 0.010 inches = 0.25 mm thick the other thicknesses correspond to the thickness of the E string. There are many sets with many variations for example where they have the first three strings from the standard 0.01 set and the last three (bottom) strings from a 0.011 or 0.012 set. An example would be: skinny top/ heavy bottom strings.
