Ordered the guitar. Shipped from Germany to the UK in no time at all. Arrived well packed. All good. The guitar looked great overall, although some of the ‘relicking’ was ‘unsubtle’ (see below). However, the guitar set-up was non-existent. Strings buzzed against the first fret, and the action was nowhere. I took the guitar to my local guitar technician, who initially ‘sniffed’ at it since Slick is not a guitar brand known in the UK (although Earl Slick himself, obviously, is). Anyway, the next day he called me to say the guitar was ready. And, when I went in to pick it up, he was absolutely raving about it. He couldn’t say enough about what a great guitar it was. It sustains for ever. The action is now perfect (he needed to rearrange the bridge to get it there. The P90 pickup sounds amazing (it is a ‘thug’). The frets were all perfect, as was the intonation, so no work need there. But he had to adjust the truss rod slightly. All in all, I spent about half the cost of the guitar again (about 150 euros) on having it set up properly. And I am absolutely delighted with it. As far as the relicking goes, it looked artificially aged. The ‘wear marks weren’t in the right place. So, I took a sanding block, and sanded it myself, to age it properly, and logically. I also sanded down some rough areas on the edge of the guitar. Then, I tool some Teak Oil (as used on boats) and applied it very carefully with cotton wool pads. It now looks as amazing as it plays. It looks as if it actually relicked for real, as opposed to some random marks here and there. So I am now very, very happy. Happy with Slick Guitars, happy with Music Produktiv, happy with my technician, happy with myself. I am going to change the nut for a brass one (by the way, they are not the size that Slick Guitars state… a millimetre or so shorter… and I am going to replace the P90 cover with a brass cover (but not the P90 itself, which sounds just wonderful). I may also replace the machine heads with brass Schaller ones, but that’s only because I have done that with every guitar I have ever owned. Habit. Finally, I’m even getting used to the awful ‘Slick’ logo on the head. The more I live with it, and play it, the less offended I am by it. But I now have an absolutely winderful guitar that I will never ever sell or give away. Congratulations to all concerned. I’m even considering buying another one.
one of the best guitars I own, period!
Great guitar. Quick tune up out of the box and plays wonderfully. Sounds amazing and great value for money. Free shipping great too!
