In this category you will find the usual representatives of the South American samba music. The Caixa is e.g. The Brazilian version of the snare drum, cuica is called a friction drum which is carried under the arm at about chest height, Surdo, the biggest drum in the Bateria de Samba. The pandeiro is not from Brazil, but is traditionally the most important instrument. Their origin is in the Arab world. The contrast is again a typical Tambourine which is Brazilian-grown. Depending on the music they are played with sticks ,hands or light plastic "whips".
